A Message from Women in Aviation International’s CEO Lynda Coffman on the FAA Reauthorization Bill

On behalf of the 18,000 members of Women in Aviation International, we applaud and offer our profound support for the recent passing of the FAA Reauthorization Act (H.R. 3935), signed into law by President Biden.

The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 provides key aviation safety improvements, grows infrastructure investments in airports of all sizes, promotes cutting-edge aviation solutions, enhances America’s aviation workforce, improves the flying public’s travel experience, and ensures a healthy general aviation sector for years to come.  This pivotal legislation not only advances the safety and efficiency of our national airspace, but also marks a significant step toward gender equity in aviation.

We are particularly pleased about the formation of the Bessie Coleman Women in Aviation Advisory Committee, a testament to the enduring legacy of a pioneering aviator who broke barriers for women. The committee's purpose—to develop strategies to bring more women into aviation careers—aligns seamlessly with our mission to increase the number of women involved in all areas of aviation and aerospace. The committee’s work will be a beacon of progress, aiming to amplify female representation in an industry where, despite a steady increase in participation, women still only represent a small fraction of the workforce.

Having participated on the previous FAA’s Women in Aviation Advisory Board, we welcome the opportunity to offer our expertise to the DOT Secretary and the FAA Administrator on the recruitment, retention, employment, education, training, well-being, and treatment of women in the aviation industry and in aviation-focused federal civil service positions.

The establishment of the Bessie Coleman Women in Aviation Advisory Committee is more than a policy change; it is a catalyst for inspiration and action, propelling us toward a future where women are welcomed, and gender parity is the cornerstone of the aviation industry. We look forward to working together to continue our mission to build a strong Women in Aviation International community around the globe.
