2027 Pioneer Hall of Fame Nomination

WAI Pioneer Hall of Fame

Established in 1992, the WAI Pioneer Hall of Fame honors women whose achievements have made a lasting impact on aviation—as record setters, trailblazers, innovators, and leaders. Special recognition is given to individuals or groups who have opened doors for other women or helped advance their success in the aviation industry.

Each year, WAI invites members to nominate outstanding women from across all sectors of aviation for induction into the Pioneer Hall of Fame.

Who Is a Pioneer?

Determining whether a nominee’s story rises to the level of “pioneer” can be challenging. At the 2007 International Women in Aviation Conference, RDML Wendi Carpenter, USNR, shared a set of guiding attributes that continue to inspire our understanding of what makes a true Pioneer. These paraphrased qualities can help you evaluate your nominee’s impact:

  • Courage in adversity: Pioneers face difficult circumstances with determination and leave a lasting legacy.

  • Forward‑looking vision: They move boldly into the unknown with grace and confidence.

  • Fearlessness (or the appearance of it): Even when fear exists, they never let it show.

  • Opportunity‑makers: They seize opportunities—or create them when none exist.

  • Bold risk‑takers: Their vision drives them to push boundaries.

  • Unwilling to accept “no”: They challenge the status quo and refuse to be limited by tradition.

  • Champions of others: Pioneers lift others up, mentor generously, and make the path easier for those who follow.

These attributes are intended as a guide—not a strict definition—as every Pioneer’s journey is unique.
