Women in Aviation, International was saddened to learn of the passing of Dot Swain Lewis on September 9, 2013. A 2004 inductee into the WAI Pioneer Hall of Fame, Dot was one of 10 female pilots taught to be an instructor at Phoebe Omlie's Women's Research Flight Instructor School from late 1942 to early 1943. She went on to accept a position teaching the WASP to fly and later became a WASP herself.
Dot passed away at the mountain home she built in Fern Valley, Idyllwild, Califonia, 21 days before her 98th birthday.
Southwest Airlines has added four Boeing 737NG type ratings to the roster of 85 scholarships offered to Women in Aviation International members. Anyone who was a member of WAI as of November 1, 2013, is eligible to apply (free!). For these SWA scholarships only, the deadline to apply has been extended to December 1, 2013. The original deadline for all other scholarships remains November 18, 2013.

The Louisville chapter of Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM) has announced an all-inclusive scholarship to attend the 2014 International Women in Aviation Conference in Orlando, Florida (March 6-8, 2014). The scholarship for first-time attendees includes all registration fees, round-trip airfare, room and board, and transportation between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Disney's Coronado Springs Resort.
