Scholarships

Scholarship awards are a major benefit of membership in Women in Aviation International and help members reach their goals and advance into the aviation and aerospace careers they have always dreamed about. A total of $875,500 (156 individual scholarships) was awarded in 2019, bringing the total scholarships awarded since 1995 to over $12 million. "Women in Aviation International (WAI) in partnership with J. Elliot Marketing (Nipomo, CA), offer a $2,500 flight training scholarship in memory of Christine Reed. Christine never completed her flight training. She loved airplanes and loved airports, and she attempted to become a private pilot. Christine passed away unexpectedly at the age of 32 and was never able to complete her flight training.Many pilots never forget their first “solo” because it’s such a momentous occasion in the process of becoming a pilot.

The Wings for Val Foundation, www.wingsforval.org, honors the legacy of Lieutenant Valerie Cappelaere Delaney (May 14, 1986 – March 11, 2013), through a mission to support women in aviation and to inspire the next generation of female leaders. Val achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a pilot when she earned her “Wings of Gold” in 2012 and started flying the EA-6B Prowler for the U.S. Navy. Just a year later, Val tragically lost her life in a training mission.

The International Society of Women Airline Pilots (ISA+21) offers scholarships to promote the advancement of women in the world’s airline flight decks. ISA+21 will award two B737 or A320 type ratings valued at $10,000 USD each. The successful candidates will train for eight days with Flight Training International in Miami or Denver. Funds will be paid directly to the flight school and training must be completed within 18 months. One letter of recommendation must be from a pilot who has flown with you.

The sponsors of this scholarship would like to make a difference in the life of one deserving person who is pursuing their dream in the world of aviation. A $3000 scholarship will be awarded to an individual working toward an instrument or multi-engine rating, commercial or CFI certificate. Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training must be completed within one year. The recipient will be chosen on a basis of merit, career aspirations and dedication, as well as contributions to her community.

This scholarship honors the legacy of Captain Sara Knutson Cullen, a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army who perished on the same day as Val in Afghanistan. Her family shares that Sara was smart, funny, and driven to succeed. She had a strong faith and positively impacted those around her through her wit, kindness, and joyfulness. This scholarship is open to a female WAI member from any country, 18 years of age or older. It will be awarded to an individual pursuing a private helicopter (rotary wing) pilot license.

HARD COPY APPLICATIONS ONLY  This scholarship is given to a woman over 30 who wants to learn to fly or who already has a pilot’s license (private, sport or recreational) and wants to pursue an advanced certificate or rating, i.e. Instrument, Commercial, etc.  The scholarship award will be paid directly to the flight school to be applied to the recipient’s account.

Wings For Val Foundation has partnered with the woman-owned DARTdrones UAV Training School to provide a drone training scholarship for a female looking to get started in the drone industry. This scholarship includes the DARTdrones ultimate Professional Drone Pilot Package; a full day of in-person training designed to give you everything you need to pass the Part 107 Drone License exam and six months access to their full online Part 107 Test Prep course and student guide.  With this package, you also get a full day of in-person drone pilot training with an expert flight instructor and access

flyGIRL Scholarship

The flyGIRL scholarship is open to female U.S. citizens of any age with an interest in aviation. The scholarship money will be paid directly to the flight school and must be used within a year of receipt. It can be used for the private pilot’s license or any advanced certificate or rating. Include in your essay why you should be awarded the funds and specifically what the funds will be used for. A personal meeting or phone interview may also be required.

Wings Over 35

The Wings over 35 Scholarship is designed to promote general aviation among men or women over the age of 35 and aid a deserving person over the age of 35 to attain certification as a Private Pilot. In addition to WAI requirements the applicant must: 1) Be over the age of 35. 2) NOT hold a Private Pilot’s License. 3) Have a desire to pursue higher ratings. 4) Have a financial Need. 5) Hold a third class medical. Applicants must explain their goals in aviation and what they have done thus far towards attaining that goal.

The High Flight Aviation Scholarship was founded in memory of aviation legend Ed Bowlin. Prior to his passing, Ed and his wife, Connie, were known for encouraging and helping people achieve their flying goals. The intent of this scholarship is to provide an avenue to make a difference in the life of one deserving person who is pursuing their dream in the world of aviation.  Funds may be used toward obtaining a Private Pilot certificate or higher up to and including an ATP.
