The Widdows family is offering a $3000 USD scholarship to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Capt. Daniel Widdows who distinguished himself as a pilot for Southern Air Cargo as a captain, instructor and check airman, as well as helping to establish the Southern Air Boeing 777 program. He was a leader who believed in living life to the fullest and will be remembered as a mentor to many, giving of himself and his time to help fellow aviators as they pursued their dreams.
To continue Dan's' legacy, and to pay homage to his place of birth, we would like to help further the education of a deserving individual. Preference will be given to a candidate from Zimbabwe but, all applicants from continental Africa will be considered based upon character, need, community involvement, and accomplishments. The ideal candidate will embody the qualities that Dan exemplified and, as he began his professional career as an aircraft maintenance technician, this scholarship will go to a WAI member looking to further his or her aviation career in one or both of the following areas: flight training (any phase) and or aviation maintenance.
The applicant must be enrolled (or committed to attending) an accredited institution (includes two- and four-year colleges, technical institutes, and certificate programs). The WAI application essay must include a detailed explanation of career plans, goals, and volunteer/community service activities. The applicant must also submit two letters of recommendation detailing how he or she contributes to the local community.
