Scholarships

Scholarship awards are a major benefit of membership in Women in Aviation International and help members reach their goals and advance into the aviation and aerospace careers they have always dreamed about. A total of $875,500 (156 individual scholarships) was awarded in 2019, bringing the total scholarships awarded since 1995 to over $12 million. WAI announces 5 new training scholarships, valued at $21,000! Apply online for one scholarship, and submit by Friday, May 31, 2019, with application form, 500-word essay, and resume. 

500-word essay should address the following:

  • Your aviation history and goals
  • What you have done to achieve your goals
  • Where you see yourself in five and 10 years
  • How the scholarship will help you achieve your objective, and your present financial need for flight or other training/education
  • How your previous training was financed include educational scholarships, awards, and honors
  • Where you would obtain the training and the hourly rate for the instructor, aircraft, and simulators, or other costs
  • Demonstrated involvement in aviation activities

Your membership must be current through June 2019.

WAI Instrument or CFII Rating Scholarship (value $5,000)

WAI will award a $5,000 scholarship to an individual pursuing an instrument rating or a CFI wanting to add their instrument qualification. Applicants must hold at least a private pilot certificate. If the individual is a full-time student enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, or an accredited college or university, she/he must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training is to be completed within one year. 

WAI Multi-Engine Rating or CFI Multi-Engine Endorsement Scholarship (value $3,000)

WAI will award a $3,000 scholarship to an individual pursuing a multiengine rating or to add a multiengine endorsement to a CFI certificate. If the applicant is a full-time student enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, or an accredited college or university, she/he must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training is to be completed within one year. 

WAI CFI Certificate Scholarship (value $3,000)

WAI will award a $3,000 scholarship to an individual pursuing a CFI certificate. Applicants must hold a current commercial/instrument certificate.  If the applicant is a full-time student enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, or an accredited college or university, she/he must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training is to be completed within one year. 

WAI Private Pilot Scholarship (value $5,000)

WAI will award a $5,000 scholarship geared toward an individual who would like to earn ta private pilot certificate. If the applicant is a full-time student enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, or an accredited college or university, she/he must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0  (on a 4.0 scale). Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training is to be completed within one year. 

WAI Aircraft Maintenance Technician Scholarship (value $5,000)

WAI will award one $5,000 scholarship to a student currently enrolled in an Aviation Maintenance Technician Program (A&P) or a degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology. If the applicant is a full-time student enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, or an accredited college or university, she/he must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training is to be completed within one year. 

The 2020 scholarship application process will start in July 2019, and applications will be due in mid-November 2019. Remember that applicants must be WAI members in good standing.  Contact Scholarship Coordinator Donna Wallace with any additional questions.
