The WAI Jazz BandServing the WAI Annual Conference since 2004
The WAI Jazz Band is associated with Women In Aviation International and was founded in 2004. It provides the opportunity for musicians to enjoy, once again, the pleasure of playing in a band. The membership of the WAI Jazz Band represents a broad spectrum of backgrounds including pilots, flight instructors, flight attendants, medical doctors, military personnel, musicians, schoolteachers, engineers, graphic artists, attorneys, students, and retirees.
The WAI Jazz Band has a strong sense of the aviation industry purpose and provides musical entertainment at the annual conference. In particular, the WAI Jazz Band performs for the Opening Reception, General Sessions, Exhibit Hall, Closing Reception, and special sponsored events. The up-beat rhythms and melodies of the group can be heard resounding throughout the hallways of the conference providing listening pleasure to the conference attendees, special guests and sponsors. Wings Financial Credit Union is the exclusive sponsor for the Women in Aviation Jazz Band.
New musicians are always welcome and encouraged to become a member of the band. In fact, several members are experiencing the joy of playing again after spending many years away from their instruments. In general a basic ability to play at a high school level and sight read with comfort are all that is required. Of course, each member will need to provide her/his own instrument, the exception being keyboard and percussion. A play list and music are sent to each band member months before the conference so that everyone can have the parts practiced prior to the first rehearsal. Rehearsals are held at the conference during evening hours prior to the first performance.
