Booth #805
After 10 years in the US Army, John attended a commercial photography school in Atlanta, known as the Portfolio Center. Afterwards he assisted full-time established commercial photographers from all across the country in completing a wide variety of assignment work. Now shooting for over 13 years, John's commercial work is concentrated on creating images of people on location.

Interested in aviation since childhood, he applied to become a helicopter pilot in the Army, but poor uncorrected depth perception led him down a different path. In 2001, while teaching an intern the intricacies of black and white exposure and development, he wound up making several striking images of a DC-3. Several fine-art prints sold, and then an Atlanta company placed several of the DC-3 images in the guest rooms at the Miami Wyndham and the Dulles Airport Marriott. Suddenly it became apparent that there might be a viable market for "aviation fine art" and he was on his way to deliberately creating aviation imagery.

Although not yet a licensed pilot, he's currently working towards that goal. Joining EAA and the AOPA several years ago have also helped broaden his aviation education. Now a separate website has been created showcasing his aviation photography, known as "Aerographs". Last year our aviation work was one of twenty projects selected for inclusion in the Best of ASMP 2008, out of 400 submitted for consideration.

John served over five years on the national board of the American Society of Media Photographers, the oldest publication photography trade group in the country. He worked on initiatives such as electronic copyright registration, establishing digital standards for the industry, and broadening the business education/acumen of member photographers. John's fine-art work is now in several private and corporate collections, and his greeting card collections are sold at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

Air Race Classic, Inc.

Booth #227
Women's air racing all started in 1929 with the First Women's Air Derby. Twenty pilots raced from Santa Monica, CA to Cleveland, OH, site of the National Air Races. Racing continued through the '30's and was renewed again after WWII when the All Women's Transcontinental Air Race (AWTAR), better known as the Powder Puff Derby, came into being. The AWTAR held its 30th, final and commemorative flight in 1977. When the AWTAR was discontinued, the Air Race Classic, Ltd., (ARC) stepped in to continue the tradition of transcontinental speed competition for women pilots and staged its premier race. The Air Race Classic was reincorporated in 2002 into the Air Race Classic, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Thirty-three years, more than 70,000 statute miles, and over 1200 teams later, the Air Race Classic remains a venue for competitive flying. Louise Thaden is quoted as saying, "...added skills are developed, self confidence is increased and enduring friendships are made". And Blanche Noyes added, "Flying is ageless."

University of Dubuque Aviation

Booth #362
The University of Dubuque (UD) is a private, Presbyterian, professional university with a focus in the liberal arts. Our commitment to nurturing the mind, body and spirit, as well as encouraging students to explore their fullest potential, is part of a rich Christian heritage that dates back to the University's founding in 1852.

For more than 25 years, the University of Dubuque's Aviation Programs have been graduating people to take leadership roles in the volatile and ever-expanding field of air transportation. To provide every student with world-class opportunities, we make sure our students are exposed to the best practices and latest techniques. UD aviation students now fly the latest model Cessna 172s, receive their instrument training in new, modern aircraft, and pilot one of the best high-performance complex trainers available. We never stop improving our technology and integrating new equipment. In addition to procuring the latest equipment, we hire outstanding teachers and flight personnel. Courses are constantly evaluated, up-dated, and keyed to changes in the aviation industry. We insist on training and safety excellence and adhere to clearly defined standards of fiscal and safety program accountability. Finally, we emphasize learning in an ethical environment -- critical in aviation, where even small errors and omissions cannot be tolerated. The UD Aviation program is accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International.

The UD Aviation Program is "right-sized", and the instruction on the flight line, in the classroom and in the airplane is personal. Students can demonstrate their excellence by joining our flight team, which regularly qualifies for national competitions. They can also become members of Alpha Eta Rho, a close-knit national aviation service fraternity for those who share a passion for aviation. Our excellent training facilities are located at the Dubuque Regional Airport seven miles south of Dubuque. This tower-controlled airport provides a complete set of instrument approaches and a maneuvers training area just outside the airport traffic area. From engine start to engine shutdown, students have continuous training with no wasted travel time.

Finally, and most important, the professional education provided by the University of Dubuque is grounded squarely in the liberal arts. In an age of technology and specialization, UD continues to stress a broad education. We insist that our graduates learn more than management and flight skills. It is our goal that students develop intellectual, social, spiritual and moral dimensions essential for succeeding in life. Students are challenged to lead lives of service to their communities, the church and the larger world.
