Pioneers in Aviation; The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) Memorial Scholarships
Perhaps the most remarkable woman in aviation is Amelia Earhart. With her pioneering spirit, she was a record setter in the airplane and out. Her legend continues to inspire women to pursue aviation. On the 112th anniversary of Amelia’s birthday, the “Amelia Earhart Pioneering Award” was awarded to Major Nicole Malachowski, USAF. Nicole exemplified triumph over adversity, self worth and confidence by becoming the first female USAF Thunderbird pilot. Recently, Maj. Malachowski drafted a Senate bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) which was later signed into law on July 1st, 2009. Nicole has donated her award of $10,000 to Women Military Aviators, Inc., (WMA) for scholarships to honor the WASP.
WMA will award five individual scholarships of $2,000. The recipient must embody the character and values of the WASP and demonstrate, by example, the core values of military service. The scholarship is intended for those women in high school or college seeking flying lessons with the intention of becoming military aviators. In addition, applicants should identify the school, college or university in which enrolled and annotate the part 141 school where training will be completed. All training must be completed within one year of receipt of the award. The applicant must show the ability to complete training and identify their future interests in military aviation. The WASP Memorial Scholarship will be presented at the 2010 Women in Aviation International (WAI) Conference in Orlando, Florida.
